Here you will find the guidance for Vietnamese, but you should also consider the guidance for all languages.
1. Capitalization
Capitalize only the first letter of a sentence and the names of people, products or places.
For names of organizations, government agencies, or companies, capitalize the first letter of words or phrases that indicate their type, function, or field of operations.
Example: Bộ Khoa học và Công nghệ
Always apply Vietnamese conventions rather than adhering strictly to the English source.
When a word can be written with or without capitalization, choose the lowercase version (examples: page web, site internet).
Capitalize:
- Proper names: Proton Mail, Proton VPN, NetShield
- Command/Folder names and keywords (first word only): Mở, Đóng, Chỉnh sửa nội dung
- First word of a sentence, title or subtitle: Bạn đã xóa email.
- Both words in UI items made of 2 commands separated by a slash: Tải xuống/Tải lên tệp
Do not capitalize:
- Words like internet and web, except when they start a sentence
- Words after a colon when on the same line: Các tính năng sau: mở, lưu, chỉnh sửa, v.v.
- Names of days and months: thứ Hai, tháng Chín
2. Abbreviations
Whenever possible, avoid using abbreviations.
Abbreviate text only when space is limited (mainly buttons, option names, or strings with character constraints) or to improve readability.
General criteria for shortening words:
- Omit at least two letters.
- Truncate a word so it ends with a consonant and place a period after it.
- Remove any space between the truncated word and the next one.
Examples:
- Driver → Trình đ.khiển
- Collection → Bộ s.tập
Days abbreviations (names of days are written without a period for visual clarity):

3. Acronyms
Common examples are VPN (Virtual Personal Network), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), etc.
The most common acronyms and their translations are included in the glossary. Always refer to the glossary when localizing acronyms.
Commonly used acronyms do not need explanations (DVD, LED, TV, etc.).
When an acronym appears multiple times in a section, include its extended form in parentheses only for the first occurrence.
4. Pronouns
English, especially technical English, is often more redundant than Vietnamese.
When translating, reduce redundancy with pronouns without losing accuracy.
When translating technical or complex strings, ensure users can clearly associate pronouns with the nouns they refer to.
Avoid possessive pronouns when possible.
Omit pronoun subjects such as “we” and “you.”

5. Gerunds (“ing” ending)
Gerunds are used in English (e.g. Creating a report).
Depending on the context, they can be translated using the infinitive (for actions or titles) or using the Vietnamese expression for something “in progress.”

6. Punctuation
Period
Add a period where necessary according to Vietnamese usage.
Do not add periods at the end of titles, links, nominative phrases, buttons, or checkboxes unless they contain more than one sentence.

Exclamation mark
Exclamation marks are less common in Vietnamese. Replace them with periods where appropriate.

Parentheses
Avoid parentheses when possible; rephrase for natural flow.

Comma
Do not place a comma before “và” and “hoặc” when linking related terms.

Colon and semicolon
Do not leave a space before colons and semicolons.
Do not capitalize the first word after a semicolon unless it begins a full sentence.

Em dash (—), en dash (–), hyphen (-)
In English, dashes separate or emphasize ideas. In Vietnamese, commas or periods are often more appropriate.
Do not use em dashes for date ranges. Use “Từ… đến” instead.

Quotation marks
Use the same quotation marks as the source.
Place the period outside the closing quotation mark.

Ampersand (&)
Replace “&” with “và” unless it is part of a company/product name or registered trademark.
7. Spacing and non-breaking spaces
Use non-breaking spaces to prevent improper division of elements such as product names, part numbers, numbers, and dates.
When using currency symbols or units of measurement, include a non-breaking space between the number and the sign.
To insert a non-breaking space:
- On Windows: Hold Alt and type 255
- On macOS: Ctrl + Option⌥ + Space bar

8. Numbers
Replace the period used as a decimal point in English with a comma in Vietnamese.
3.75 → 3,75
For numbers smaller than 1, always include a zero before the decimal comma.
.5 → 0,5
The period in software version numbers remains unchanged.
Proton Mail v.3
Use a dot as a thousand separator. Never use thousand separators in years.
15,000 and year 2015 → 15.000 và năm 2015
Time and date:
- Hours and minutes are separated by a colon:
at 9:25 P.M → vào lúc 9:25 chiều - Use the format “dd/mm/yyyy”:
01-31-22 (mm/dd/yy) → 31/01/2022
9. Currencies
Do not convert USD ($) or EUR (€) to local currency.
Do not use the currency symbols € or $. Use EUR and USD instead, written after the number, separated by a non-breaking space.
Example:
Amount of €30 → Số tiền 30 EUR
10. Units of measurement
Use the metric system.
Insert a non-breaking space between a number and the relevant unit.
Convert imperial units to metric where appropriate.
Example:
6 feet → 1,83 m

11. English/US terms and formulations
And more
And more (or and much more) is a typical U.S. formulation used at the end of lists.
In Vietnamese, replace it with “…” or “v.v.” depending on the context.

12. Foreign words
The decision to keep an English word or use a Vietnamese equivalent depends on how widely the term is used.
To determine this, compare online search results for both the English word and its Vietnamese translation. The more frequent term should guide your choice.
If in doubt about an important term, contact the Proton Localization team for an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) check.
Foreign words may appear in quotation marks or italics if uncommon. Widely accepted English terms remain as in the original and do not take an s in the plural form.
When foreign words are well understood, they can remain in English. Add an explanation in Vietnamese only when necessary.
Avoid excessive use of anglicisms.
13. Localizing domains and email addresses
Localize fictitious domain names and email addresses used for explanatory purposes.
- Translate the local part of the email address.
- Translate the domain name.

14. Localizing CTA (Call To Action) buttons
Depending on the context (support page, landing page, etc.) and the placement of the CTA, use either the infinitive or the 2nd person plural form. Confirm with the language lead when needed.
For neutral instructions or additional information, use infinitive:

For engaging buttons, use 2nd person plural:
